If you haven’t gotten the chance to watch the highest-grossing film in Japan, you can finally do so now for free!
That’s because Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train is now free to stream on iQiyi Philippines starting today, June 16. The hit anime movie will be accessible at no cost in the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries.
Set during Japan’s Taisho era from 1912 to 1926, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba follows a young Tanjiro Kamado, who strives to become a demon slayer after his family is slaughtered and his younger sister Nezuko is turned into a demon. The manga is written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge and was serialized by Weekly Shōnen Jump from February 2016 to May 2020.
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train picks up after the events of the first season, and now follows Tanjiro, Nezuko, Zenitsu, and Inosuke, who boards the Infinity Train with the mission to take down the demon responsible for the disappearance of forty people and the death of the demon slayers who oppose it. The movie also serves as a bridge between the first and second seasons.
Released in October 2020, Mugen Train made box office history in Japan by becoming the highest-grossing movie ever, taking the top spot from Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning fantasy film Spirited Away. The Haruo Sotozaki-helmed film has recorded sales of over 32.5 billion yen, or about $313.9 million, to achieve this feat.
It is also the fastest movie to reign box office records, as it grossed 10 billion yen in Japan within just 10 days of opening, and 27.5 billion yen in just 45, effectively edging out Hollywood’s “Titanic” as the second-highest-grossing movie ever in that time. This makes the opening of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train not just the biggest for Japanese animation, but the biggest for any foreign language film ever.
