Kaye Abad happy to work with actors who do not outshine each other: “Minsan, may co-actors ako, nafi-feel ko yun, e, na di nagpakabog!”
The tearjerking church scene of Kaye Abad, Paolo Contis, and Patrick Garcia’s characters in Netflix and MAVX Productions’ “A Journey” is probably one of the most-raved performances of the three ‘90s actors.
But did you know that shooting this was actually a challenging moment for these three “Tabing Ilog” stars because they could not cry during the scene?
Paolo shared this with FreebieMNL and select online media during a roundtable interview organized by Netflix on Thursday, April 11, 2024.
Paolo recalled, “There was a time na meron kaming isang eksena na di ako nakaiyak, e, sa church.
“So, ako, pressure na pressure ako kasi si Kaye Abad ito, e, di ba? Comeback [niya] ‘tapos reding-ready siya, e.
“Buti na lang hindi siya nakaiyak, ‘tapos di ako na-pressure! ‘Tapos ang maganda, e, di hindi ako nakaiyak, usap-usap kami, ‘Bukas na lang?’ ‘Sige, pahinga muna tayo, bukas na natin i-shoot.’”
On the next day of shooting, Paolo and Kaye were both trying their best to motivate each other to make sure they’ll deliver well.
Apparently, they were actually both ready to do the scene!
Paolo continued, “So, ready na ako ano, ‘tapos si Kaye, nagmo-motivate ako, pumunta siya sa akin ‘tapos niyakap niya lang ako.
“So, nagyayakapan naman kami ‘tapos akala ko, nagpe-prepare siya, akala niya nagpe-prepare ako, kanina pa ako ready ‘tapos ready na rin pala siya!
“So, muntik na ma-chopsuey yung eksena, naghihintayan lang talaga kami! Magkayakap kami, ‘Ano, kaya mo na?’ ‘Kanina pa.’ ‘Ah, ganun ba? Kaya ko na rin!’
“So, alam mo yung walang ka-pressure pressure, walang kaarte-arte.”
Kaye then quipped, “Si Patrick lang yung nang-pressure sa amin!”
Patrick joked, “Nanonood lang ako, sabi ko kay Direk, ‘Arte naman nitong mga ‘to!”

Kaye on working with actors who do not outshine
Of this, Kaye is just happy that with her comeback project, her co-actors did not have to compete with her just to shine in a scene.
Kaye explained, “Di ba, usually kapag sa eksena, meron diyan na hindi ka papatalo? Yung iba, ‘Teka, dapat magaling din ako sa eksenang ito!’
“Dito, na-feel ko yung magbigayan. Kapag moment mo ito, moment mo ito. So, doon ko na-feel na walang kompetisyon sa grupong ito. Parang sapawan.”
Paolo quipped about Kaye, “Kasi ugali ni Kaye yan dati sa ‘Tabing Ilog,’ ugali niyang mananapaw siya, yung di naman kailangan, iiyak!”
Laughing, Kaye responded, “Kawawa na nga yung itsura ko, di pa ako mananapaw, di ba?”

In their youth-oriented series “Tabing Ilog,” aired in 1999, Kaye’s character is a poor barrio lass who would always cry every episode.
Going back to “A Journey,” Kaye then continued, “So, doon ko na-feel na walang kompetisyon sa mga eksenang nagawa namin kasi minsan, may co-actors ako, nafi-feel ko yun, e, na di nagpakabog!
“Pero dito, doon ko na-feel na mga totoong kaibigan, professional, at saka nanlilibre sila! So, na-feel ko talaga na I can rely on them, di ako napagastos.”
Paolo added, “Diyusko, sa Australia, hindi siya gumastos, day! First day, wala nang per diem si Kaye Abad! Hindi niya nilabas!”
Patrick’s friendship with Paolo and Kaye
During the interview, Patrick shared how Paolo wanted to support him during his first day by offering to go to the set.
But another moment that proved that they count on each other, at least for Patrick, was when he got hospitalized in Australia.

Patrick related, “Well, when I was in Australia, na-hospital ako doon, e.
“Sinamahan ako nito [ni Paolo] hanggang morning yun and they all waited for me and of course, hindi ko makakalimutan yun.”
Teasing Kaye, Patrick said in jest, “Si Kaye wala, walang tinulong si Kaye. Inubos niya lang pera namin!”
Kaye then countered, “Nag-offer ako!”
Paolo expounded, “Actually, na-ospital si Patrick, siyempre, sinamahan ko siya bilang kaibigan.
“Noong sinamahan ko si Patrick, mga 10. Noong natapos [siya sa] ospital, mga alas sais na, medyo nagsisi na ako na parang sobra naman ‘to para sa friendship, 6 na ng umaga, may shoot pa the next day!
“Pero, siyempre, hindi ko papabayaan yung kaibigan ko.”
“A Journey,” directed by RC Delos Reyes, started streaming on Netflix on April 12, 2024. It served as the reunion project of Kaye, Paolo, and Patrick years after their iconic youth-oriented series “Tabing Ilog,” which aired from 1999 to 2003.
