Julia Barretto Had “No Awkwardness” In Kissing Scene With Diego Loyzaga

Julia Barretto reveals doing “Will You Be My Ex?” feels like coming home

Julia Barretto did not feel any awkwardness during her kissing scene with Diego Loyzaga for the movie “Will You Be My Ex?”

The two are teaming up for the first time after 10 years. They first teamed up in an episode of “Wansapanataym,” which aired in 2013. The last time they worked together was in the 2014 series “Mirabella.”

Despite not working with each other for a long time, Julia and Diego remained close, which is the reason why it felt easy doing kilig and kissing scenes for the film.

Julia says, “Si Diegs, I’ve known him for quite a long time. Matagal ko na rin siyang kaibigan, so parang with this film, nagkaroon kami ng chance to catch up and it was like a reunion.

Kasi matagal ko na siyang kilala, there was no awkwardness or anything like that. It was always a safe space and masaya lang. It was such a fun set.”

Julia faced the press, including FreebieMNL, during a solo press conference for her upcoming movie on June 5, 2023 at Greyhounds Cafe, Podium, Ortigas City.

“Will You Be My Ex?” is scheduled to premiere in cinemas on June 21, 2023.

Doing romantic-comedy again

Julia is happy to be doing a romantic-comedy movie again since her recent films were of different genres, including the mature drama “Expensive Candy” and the horror film “Bahay Na Pula.”

In fact, it did not take long before she said yes to the project.

She recalls, “I remember this being pitched to me and without even reading the script yet, I was already 50% in the project. Naging bonus na lang noong nabasa ko yung script.

“Isa ito sa pinakamabilis na ‘Go, I’m gonna do this.’ I think because the way it was presented to me, the concept was how real their love story is.”

One factor is that the story of “Will You Be My Ex,” which tackles the pain and kilig of relationships, is relatable to the audience and even to the actors.

Kasi lahat tayo talaga pinagdadaanan ito. Palagi tayong nasa crossroad na ‘Should we just end this finally or should we give this another chance?,’” she says.

“It’s like coming home, so I was so excited to do this film, and she’s also a theater actress and parang hindi pa ako nakakagawa noon. Marami akong nakasamang totoong theater actors which ang dami ko ring natutunan from them.

“So, more than the film, I’m so grateful for all the friendships na na-form sa film na ito.”

Even then, it was not an easy ride for Julia to portray her character Chris.

She says, “I feel like with ‘Will You Be My Ex,’ I feel like I was really stretched in this film because yung character, yung story asked so much of her and of me.

Parang emotionally, siguro physically also, kasi theater actress si Chris dito and she has so many different sides. Hindi lang siya seryoso.

“When you watch the film, she can be a lot also, so, I don’t know if how I can…”

She then stops, saying, “Baka marami kasi akong ma-share, e!”

Julia then continues, “But I feel like doing ‘Will You Be My Ex?’ feels like me coming home after ‘Expensive Candy.’ It was exciting because it’s rom-com but it also has drama which I love very much.

“I love that the romance is realistic as it can be and it’s a lot in this film, there’s a lot of comedy, there’s a lot of romance but there’s also a lot of emotions. It’s like coming home.”

Prior to moving to VIVA, Julia is known to do light-hearted romance films such as “Vince, Kath, and James,” “Love You To The Stars And Back,” “I Love You, Hater,” and “Between Maybes.”

“Will You Be My Ex?” is directed by Real Florido and also features Bea Binene, Divine Aucina, Mickey Ferriols, and Juan Carlos Galano.
