You might have finished watching Netflix’s adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone wondering where you’ve spotted some of the familiar faces. That’s why we rounded up a list of the movies and series your favorite characters have appeared in.
Jessie Mei Li
Playing Alina Starkov was a Jessie Mei Li’s first big break. This isn’t her first acting gig, though, as the Chinese-British actress was casted for a live stage production of All About Eve in 2019. We’ll be catching more of her in an upcoming film with Anya-Taylor Joy and Matt Smith titled Last Night in Soho.
Aside from acting, Archie Renaux who plays Malyen Orestev in the series also models. He was cast in Amazon’s Hanna and BBC One’s Gold Digger where he got his breakthrough role. Renaux isn’t new to Netflix productions as he was also in the film Voyagers.
Whether you were rooting for General Kirigan or suspicious of him from the get-go, there’s no doubt Ben Barnes did an excellent portrayal of the character. Barnes’ has the credentials to back his acting skills, with previous appearances in films like Seventh Son, Stardust, and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. You’ve probably also seen him in Netflix’s The Punisher and HBO’s Westworld.
Freddy Carter plays the criminal mastermind, Kaz Brekker, who is a fan-favorite character in the Grishaverse. Graduating from the Oxford School of Drama in 2015, he has since been making a name for himself in various series and movies. Catch him as Jason Ripper on Pennyworth and as Peter “Pin” Hawthorne on Free Rein.
Inej Ghafa is the 23-year-old actress’s first major role. She works alongside Kaz and Jesper as a member of The Crows. Suman is no stranger to the science fiction and action genre because she has previously appeared on an episode of Doctor Who and The Outpost.
Although Kit Young initially auditioned for the role of Mal, it’s safe to say he pulled off playing Jesper. He’s well-versed with theatrical productions, having graduated from London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Young’s credits include appearances in a live performance of Julius Caesar and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Veteran actress Zoë Wanamaker plays Baghra in this series, but other fans might recognize her as Madame Hooch from Harry Potter or as Cassandra in Doctor Who. Wanamaker has had her fair share of on-screen and on-stage performances and she’s definitely a name (and face) to remember.
With a stellar cast, it’s hard to list down every single achievement each one has gotten. Fingers crossed there’s a season 2 on the way so we can see more of our favorite characters.
