Why First-Time International Travelers Should Go To Thailand

It’s a must-see for all kinds of travelers.

Safety concerns and closed borders made traveling impossible over the past two years. Now that the world has reopened, it’s time to dust off those passports and book those flights. If you’re a first-time traveler, Thailand is one place you have to visit.

I first went there in 2017. It wasn’t my first time outside of the country, but it was the first time I traveled solo. It was that visit that made me feel like Thailand is a great destination for first-time travelers. Here’s why.

Experts and noobs are welcome in Thailand

Are you a travel noob in need of all the conveniences? Or are you an expert who can survive with the bare essentials? Thailand has plenty of things to offer for every type of traveler. From dorms to hotels, fancy restos to street food, there’s something for everyone there.

Traveling on a budget? There’s little to worry about when it comes to cost. Plane tickets to Thailand are cheaper than tickets to some Philippine destinations. Foreign exchange rates from PHP to THB are a lot more forgiving compared to the US dollar or the Japanese yen. Food and accommodations are affordable, regardless of your preferences. In other words, a tight budget can go a long way.

Thailand is a shoppers’ paradise

It’s also a great place for those with an entrepreneurial spirit.

Chatuchak and Pratunam in Bangkok are a lot like Divisoria. Both markets are great places to shop for fast fashion at affordable prices. Many stores sell at retail and wholesale prices. So if you have a good eye for style, you can make the trip and buy products to sell.

It’s the same for skincare products. You can get all the bath, pain management, and skincare products you need at outlet stores in Bangkok. Some sellers even travel to Thailand to do their live selling and pasabuy.

Shopping for yourself or for pasalubong also works if you don’t plan on going into live selling.

Tours aplenty

First-time travelers have a lot of choices when it comes to exploring Thailand. Bangkok has several temples and museums for you to visit.

One of my favorite ways to go around the city is via the Chao Praya Tourist Boat. It’s a hop-on-hop-off boat service that offers unlimited rides for approximately PHP240. Stops on the route include Asiatique, Temple of Dawn (Wat Arun), and Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho).

A foodie’s dream

Thai food is one of my favorite cuisines in the world. The flavors are different from a Filipino palate. But the techniques and applications are ones we’re familiar with.

For me, must-try Thai food includes pad thai and tom yum goong. You can also try pad kra pao moo (stir-fried pork with holy basil), and som tam (papaya salad).

Ready to go?

Whether it’s your first or tenth trip, traveling alone or with a group, Thailand is a place that’s worth coming back to.

Bangkok is a great place to start. Don’t forget to add Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya, and Ayuthaya among other cities to visit on your return.
