Margielyn Didal continues to show her Pinoy pride with this sneaker collaboration she did with New Balance. She took inspiration from the Cebuano rice cake, pusô, that she used to sell on the streets as a child to create this exquisite NB Numeric 272 design. It’s a durable skate shoe that maintains a classic look.
As a Cebuana, pusô is a specialty that’s near to Didal’s heart. “My inspiration for my new shoes is the pusô, it is made of rice covered with coconut leaves. You see the details on the side, when you touch it, it’s like holding the pusô,” she said. “I don’t know how to make one but my mom makes one, fill it with rice grain, then have it boiled.” The pro-skater revels in how much she loves rice and how she can’t live without it.
Rice cake-Inspired Numeric 272
A close-up of the NB Numeric 272 sneakers shows a black suede sole with a greenish woven upper that imitates the rice cake’s coconut-leaf wrapping. The pair comes with a two-toned lace, and the insole has a printed image of the Cebu delicacy. Her initials M.A.D. are on the heel of the right shoe, while the left has the city’s area code.
