David Licauco admits he originally preferred doing romance than action
The series, which will premiere on September 11, 2023, is a TV adaptation of the 1991 action movie starring Sharon Cuneta and Robin Padilla. This time, Barbie and David are stepping into their roles, respectively.
In an interview with FreebieMNL before the press conference of the show on August 31, David says that their roles, particularly his, are a far cry from what they did in “Maria Clara at Ibarra.”
David says, “Maninibago sila kasi it’s a different David. Usually, the roles that I get ay yung mga mayaman, negosyante, laging naka-coat, and all that. But this one is very different talaga from the usual.”
David admits that the taping for the series, given that the show falls under the action genre, was challenging at the beginning.
He explains, “At the start, it was very challenging because, as we know, it’s a full-fledged action series. But with the help of our director and cinematographer, I see the passion from the ground up, e. Doon sa mga utility man to the directors, lahat talaga sila passionate sa ginagawa nila.
“So, nakakahawa yun and I feel like I already got the hang of it kasi ang tagal na rin.”
The show is directed by Enzo Williams, who helmed GMA-7’s action-comedy series, “Walang Matigas Na Pulis Sa Matinik Na Misis.”
Doing Robin Padilla’s role
Admittedly, David was not surprised that, for his next project with Barbie, they were given an action-romance series.
But only because “hindi naman siya nag-cross my mind na parang ano kayang next project ko.”
While he does not feel the pressure of being offered the project, David knows that he and Barbie have big shoes to fill, coming from the success of the original movie.
David says, “Hindi naman ako na-pressure. I think they got me for this role for a reason and deserve ko naman siguro from the hard work that I put in.
“But again, it’s big shoes to fill for me, also for Barbie kasi siyempre, si Senator Robin Padilla and si Sharon Cuneta [yung naunang gumanap]. But what I try to do is to stay in the moment.”
David Licauco: the next action star?
During the Q&A portion of the media conference, FreebieMNL asked Barbie and David about their action scenes.
Barbie did not mention about any of her action scenes, but she commended David’s “dedication and effort” to the project.
She shares, “Kung hindi po ako nagkakamali, he insisted on attending personal acting workshops, stunt workshops and training, which he insisted personally, knowing a guy like him na sobrang busy.
“[He] will really make time para mas ma-improve yung craft niya and mas ma-pull off ng maayos yung character niya sa project na ito. So, just so proud of him for doing that.”
As for David, he admits that he prefers romance more than action.
“Noong sinabi sa akin na action series nga siya, to be honest with you, sa acting kasi, ang gusto ko yung mga romantic scenes, e.
“Nakakapagod naman talaga kapag action, but then, noong nakilala ko sila Direk Enzo, nakita ko na yung action pala, meron ding acting doon, mga nuances doon, paano siya gagawin.
“Also, noong nakatrabaho ko si Gov. ER [Ejercito], nakita ko, very passionate siya sa ginagawa niya to my thinking na, ‘Uy, pwede ko pala ‘tong gawin.’ Not just for this teleserye but for the coming years, maybe, kung mabibigyan ako ng opportunity again. So, I’m really enjoying doing it, surprisingly.”
During the Q&A, action star and former Laguna governor ER Ejercito was all praises to David for his action scenes.
The two are mostly working together in action sequences as ER plays David’s kontrabida in the show.
Based on how they worked together in these scenes, ER declared that David would be “the next Ace Vergel and the next Rudy Fernandez” during the media conference.
Ace Vergel and Rudy Fernandez are two of the most respected action stars of their time.
FreebieMNL then asked David about his reaction regarding this.
“Siyempre, it’s such a huge compliment for me kaya maraming salamat at saka si Gov. kasi, kapag tinignan mo siya from the outside, talagang intimidating.
“Pero nagkakatulungan kami, napaka-humble despite lahat ng accomplishments niya sa buhay.”
“Maging Sino Ka Man,” which is dubbed as a special limited series by GMA-7, will run for eight weeks and will air after “24 Oras” on GMA Telebabad.
Also part of the show are Jean Garcia, Mikoy Morales, Juan Rodrigo, Jean Saburit, Faith da Silva, Jeric Raval, Antonio Aquitania, Rain Matienzo, and Juancho Trivino.
