Gloc-9: “I don’t mind. Anak ko yun”
Rapper Gloc-9 shares that his hit song “Sirena” is dedicated to his son—Sean Daniel—who is an out-and-proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community.
This and more, as the 46-year-old OPM singer revealed the “hints of magic” embedded in his song in an interview with ABS-CBN’s MJ Felipe on Monday, February 26, 2024.
“Sirena” was released in 2012 as one of the tracks from Gloc-9’s sixth studio album “Mga Kwento Ng Makata” under Universal Records.
Following its launch, the song has been heavily used as an LGBTQIA+ anthem mainly for its strong narrative of empowerment. But before that, Gloc-9 admitted his reluctance prior to its release due to its highly sensitive theme.
He shares, ”Yung song na yan, nung ire-release namin yan, takot na takot ako. Takot na takot dahil ayaw kong makainsulto ng tao.”
“Alam ko kasi nung sinulat ko yan, hindi ko tsinelas o sapatos ang suot-suot ko. Ako’y nagsuot ng ibang sapatos o tsinelas.
“Kaya ako natatakot kasi ayaw kong may naisulat ako dun na baka, e, ‘Sira-ulo pala ito, hindi naman to ganyan.’”

But that doubt lifted as many people expressed their positive thoughts on the song. Even for Gloc-9, the track bears a deeper meaning upon knowing that his son is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community—a revelation that happened years after “Sirena” was released.
As tears well up in his eyes, Gloc-9 shares, “My son is gay. Nung sinulat ko yun, hindi niya pa sinasabi sa amin. Hindi ko alam kung paano ko sasabihin sa anak ko na kung gaano ko siya kamahal.
“Hindi naman ako ma-showbiz, e. And I think para sabihin ko ito now, ako ay proud na proud sa anak ko. Ako ay excited sa kung ano man ang kaya niyang ma-achieve sa buhay.
“Minsan iniisip ko how life gives you hints of magic here and there. Nung natapos ko yung ‘Sirena,’ hindi ko naman alam, e. And I don’t mind. Anak ko yun.”

All things considered, Gloc-9 says that he is very proud of his son, and he loves him together with his other kid Daniele Shaun so much.
He says, “Ako’y proud na may anak ako na tulad ni Daniel. Mahal na mahal ko ang mga anak ko at gagawin ko ang lahat para sa kanila.”
