Metro Manila Film Festival 2023 Unveils Six Remaining Entries

MMFF completes this year’s roster with six new entries!

The selection committee of the Metro Manila Film Festival has finally completed this year’s film roster after it named six more entries for its 49th edition of the inaugural film celebration. 

Contrary to the initial decision of picking four films, MMFF then decided to add six films, which would run from December 25, 2023 to January 7, 2024. 

Here are the remaining six entries for the MMFF 2023: 

“Firefly”

“Firefly,” is a magical-realism story centered on a child’s search for a legendary place told and retold by her mother during bedtime. 

Alessandra de Rossi and Euwenn Mikaell will play as mother and son, with other renowned stars making up most of its plot, such as Yayo Aguila, Cherry Pie Picache, Miguel Tanfelix, Ysabel Ortega, Max Collins, Epy Quizon, and Dingdong Dantes. 

GMA Pictures and GMA Public Affairs’ “biggest 2023 film” is helmed by director Zig Dulay, 

“GomBurZa” 

Jesuit Communications and Saranggola Productions are set to bring “GomBurZa,” a historical period film under the direction of Pepe Diokno. 

It revolves around the martyrdom of the three Filipino priests Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora. The ensemble is composed by Dante Rivero, Cedric Juan, Enchong Dee, Elijah Canlas, and Piolo Pascual. 

“When I Met You In Tokyo”

The popular love team of Vilma Santos and Christopher de Leon will make a huge theatrical comeback 15 years after their last film, “Mano Po.” This time, they will be joined by on-screen partners Darren Espanto and Cassy Legaspi for a romantic-drama film shot in Japan.

“Becky & Badette”

This comedy film under The IdeaFirst Company and Octoberian Films is also a comeback movie of Pokwang and Eugene Domingo’s comical tandem. . 

Under the direction of Jun Robles Lana, the two comediennes will lead the cast ensemble composed by Adrian Lindayag, Agot Isidro, and  Romnick Sarmenta among many others. 

“Mallari” 

This horror film headlined by Piolo Pascual draws inspiration from a true story of a parish priest, Mallari, who had killed 57 people during the 1800s. The infamous serial killing of this religious leader had even antedated the more famous Jack the Ripper by six decades. 

It also casts Janella Salvador and is helmed by Derick Cabrido under Mentorque Productions. 

“Broken Heart’s Trip”

“Broken Heart’s Trip” is an LGBTQ-oriented film bannered by Christian Bables and Jaclyn Jose. It was produced by BMC Films and helmed by director Lex Bonife. 

The cast ensemble is composed of reputable names in acting and comedy, including Teejay Marquez, Andoy Ranay, Marvin Yap, Petite, and Iyah Mina. 

Prior to the announcement, the selection committee had initially announced the first batch of films, namely “A Mother and Son’s Story, “K (Ampon),” “Penduko,” and “Rewind.” 

The 49th edition of Metro Manila Film Festival will run from December 25, 2023 to January 7, 2024. 

The Parade of Stars will be held in CaMaNaVa, while the Gabi Ng Parangal will take place on December 27.
