Find out what went into making this cute superhero flick!
The movie DC’s League of Super-Pets took inspiration from actual comic book characters. If you’re a reader, you’ve most likely heard of Ace the Bat-Hound and Krypto the Superdog. But did you know that the movie also has some real-world inspiration?
The movie follows Krypto as he deals with Superman’s infatuation with Lois Lane. Meanwhile, an evil guinea pig named Lulu captures the Justice League. This forced Krypto to work with other super-pets to save them. Dwayne Johnson, Keanu Reeves, and Kevin Hart lent their voices to the movie.
DC’s League of Super-Pets was co-directed by Sam Levine. He’s an animator and narrative artist. This isn’t his first DC-related movie project. He helped write The Lego Batman Movie a few years back.
In an interview, Levine’s co-director Jared Stern opened up about working on the movie. He revealed that his wife’s work played an important part in inspiring him.
“My wife volunteers at a local pet shelter. While I was there, I noticed that the front room had these adorable little kittens. It’s a miracle when any pet is adopted. But I had a feeling that those kittens have a good shot,” Stern shared.
“And then in the back room, there were these older pets and some with various problems. It felt like they didn’t have as good of a shot at getting adopted. They lived there. They were the lifers. And it was great that the shelter took care of them. But I don’t know why I had this thought, ‘What if these pets got superpowers?’ Because they were feeling so powerless to me, ‘What if they had powers?'”
His experience complemented Stern’s partnership with Warner Bros. That was when the idea for the DC’s League of Super-Pets movie was born.
Easter eggs in ‘DC’s League of Super-Pets’
For his part, Stern suggested that the movie has easter eggs for eagle-eyed DC fans to discover.
“There are fun things on the shelves in Superman’s apartment to look for. I would say, the way you might keep a bottle on your shelf or the artwork,” Stern said. “There are some fun things from comic book canon. And references to the wonderful people we love and are fans of.”
DC’s League of Super-Pets hit theaters on July 29, 2022. If you’re in the market for family-friendly fare, it’s the perfect movie for you.
