Setbacks and trials are a normal part of the journey called life, but you can opt not to let them get to you. According to, Nigerian Yale Law School graduate Seun Adebiyi had to set aside his Olympic dreams when he was diagnosed with lymphoma and leukemia.

Despite this major setback, he’s overcome all odds by becoming a cancer-free entrepreneur. He even got to carry the torch for Nigeria in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Needless to say, Adebiyi knows all about mental toughness and resilience. Here are his tips for you to develop unbeatable mental toughness:

  1. Never confuse who you are with what you do. As per Adebiyi, you shouldn’t confuse your self-worth with your accomplishments. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.
  1. Master your inner dialogue. What you say to yourself is more important than what the world thinks about you. Your mindset determines your reality.
  1. Learn to live in the moment. Sometimes, life can knock you down to your knees, and leave you feeling forlorn. That’s why you need to find an anchor, something you can cling to when all else seems hopeless.
  1. Fortify your village, then build a moat. There’s an African saying, “It takes a village to raise a child.” The same principle applies in life as well. You need to surround yourself with people who will support you no matter what, and you need to invest time and energy to strengthen those relationships. You also need to distance yourself from toxic people who tear down your self-confidence.
  1. Be prepared. Adebiyi suggests that you work on your self-image, inner dialogue, present-moment awareness, and key relationships now. Exert effort to work on yourself and your tribe each day.

You need to bear in mind though that developing unbeatable mental toughness is a process, and you shouldn’t beat yourself up for feeling down sometimes. It doesn’t matter how many times you get knocked down. What matters is that you pick yourself up each time.
