All of us need a breather every once in awhile. It’s hard to notice when, though, in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. But if we don’t stop and smell the roses from time to time, we might suffer from overdue feelings of stress, anxiety, and depression.
That’s why we’ve got a list of signs for you so you can better identify when you simply need to relax. Be wary when you start to feel the following:
1. You feel so overwhelmed that you can’t finish anything
When you’ve got a dozen things on your to-do list, it feels like a sudden flood of responsibilities and you become paralyzed, unable to even begin. You might find yourself mindlessly scrolling on social media just to avoid the task. This is you being overwhelmed to the point that you need distraction, and unfortunately, procrastinating will only make it worse as all your tasks build up.
2. You constantly feel dread at the thought of having to finish the work that you have to do
It happens before you even see the assignment. When your boss messages you for a meeting, or even hints at an upcoming deadline, you unexpectedly feel like it’s the worst thing that could happen to you at the moment. You get anxious just thinking about another long night spent trying to finish one thing and you overthink it until you can’t anymore. This is mentally draining on your part and can lead to burnout before you even have a chance of doing the task.
3. You’re starting to lose weight, feel lightheaded, or get frequent headaches
Stress translates itself all over the body. If you feel it in your head, you will definitely feel it in your body. Sudden weight loss and frequent headaches mean you’re working past your capacity and if you don’t stop soon, you could end up in the hospital. Remember that too much stress can even lead to ulcers.
4. You can’t remember the last time you talked to someone about something personal OR you can’t remember the last time you didn’t rant about work
Either you’re not talking at all or you’re talking too much, but the message is the same — work is taking over your life. Keeping it in and oversharing can definitely affect your social circle and relationships, which can further alienate you from others.
5. You can’t (or don’t) sleep
The most telltale sign of an overworked person is their inability to sleep at night. Sleep is important because it gives our body the rest it needs to function properly for the next day. If you’re up all night catching up on deadlines and preparing for the next work day, you’re really not doing your body a favor. You may even worsen this cycle and develop insomnia.
If you have been feeling any of these things, know that it’s time for you to sit out and relax, even for just a moment. While work is important, your body is also something that must be taken care of, especially in the time of COVID.
So keep these signs in mind and watch out for your physical and mental health! Your body is depending on you.
