The Harold & Kumar star has spoken his truth, revealing that he is engaged to his partner of 11 years.
In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, where he was promoting his memoir You Can’t Be Serious, Kal Penn shared his thoughts and insights on many topics, including his career and relationship with his partner, Josh.
“Josh and I’ve been together for 11 years,” he explained. “We had our 11th anniversary in October. So, writing about it…it’s very matter-of-fact in our lives, and when you’re the son of Indian immigrants who says that you want to be an actor, the chaos that that creates in your family and your community, will trump anything else, always.”
Penn is best known for his role as Kumar in the long string of Harold & Kumar films, a series of buddy stoner comedy films that spanned the early to mid-2000s. He later on gained fame for his role in the medical TV series House, before taking a break from acting to campaign for Barack Obama.
He worked in the White House Office of Public Liaison, handling Asian American and Pacific Islander communities and the arts community. It was in Washington where the actor met his partner.
“I discovered my own sexuality relatively late in life compared to many other people,” Penn told People magazine. “There’s no timeline on this stuff. People figure their shit out at different times in their lives, so I’m glad I did when I did.”
He went on to say that he had always been “public” about his relationship, though his loved ones aren’t exactly the same. “Josh, my partner, my parents, and my brother, four people who I’m closest to in the family, are fairly quiet. They don’t love attention and shy away from the limelight,” he shared.
Fans can now purchase You Can’t Be Serious, which was released by Simon & Schuster on November 2.
