Remember that one time you posted a funny tweet that got so many likes you pinned it to your profile? Well, you might reap something out of that soon besides being a one-hit-wonder.
According to tweets by tech blogger and app researcher Jane Manchun Wong, Twitter is working on a “tip jar” feature that lets your followers send a tip by entering your username on Bandcamp, Cash App, Patreon, PayPal, or Venmo and dropping tips there.
Wong posted a photo of the potentially upcoming feature along with another scoop about a new “super follow” button. In the photo, a blue cash icon appears above the user’s profile name.
Meanwhile, Super Follow is another feature being developed that allows famous accounts with a significant number of followers to charge them for premium content.
They announced the pair of features — which kind of works like OnlyFans if you think about it — during last February’s Analyst Day.
“We’re rethinking incentives and exploring solutions to provide monetary incentive models for creators and publishers to be directly supported by their audience,” Twitter said in its presentation per CNN.
Making money out of your charming and impeccable wit seems to be a dream job, but until Twitter sorts out the kinks of a possibly erratic feature, then we’ll just have to keep our genius in the drafts.
After all, it can toss Twitter to a tussle: would basing the criteria of who qualifies for Super Followers push people to buy bot accounts? Could a Super Follow create a class rift between regular and premium accounts? If we know anything about Twitter, it’s that everything is an issue, so these have to be resolved before they are rolled out.
