Pride PH Drops Silent Sanctuary From QC Pride March Due To ‘Homophobic Actions’

Former Silent Sanctuary vocalist Ian Carandang reveals his experience with the band: “They told me I needed to go back into the closet if I wanted to keep being their vocalist.”

Pride PH decided to remove the OPM rock band Silent Sanctuary from their list of performers for the “Love Laban sa QC” event on Saturday, June 24.

The statement cited alleged homophobic actions by the group as the reason.

The statement of Pride PH read: “Pride PH would like to assure our queer siblings in the LGBTQIA++ community that we remain a safe space for all and hence will not take this nor other similar cases lightly.”

Former vocalist Ian Carandang expressed his disappointment on Twitter upon learning that Silent Sanctuary was performing at the Pride event. He revealed his experience of discrimination within the group.

“Just learned that Silent Sanctuary is playing at QC Pride Night and the fact that when I was their vocalist, they told me I needed to go back into the closet if I wanted to keep being their vocalist is extremely offensive to me,” Ian shared in a Twitter thread.

He further expressed his frustration that the band has never publicly acknowledged or made amends for their actions.

Pride PH emphasized its commitment to its values and principles, condemning discrimination, homophobia, and harassment.

“HOMOPHOBES ARE NEVER WELCOME ON OUR STAGE. THIS IS OUR SAFE SPACE. THIS IS OUR PRIDE.”

Silent Sanctuary responds to allegations

Silent Sanctuary has since responded to the allegations.

The group said they have always respected all forms of gender preferences and identity. They also expressed sadness over the accusations and claimed that they have shared stages and dressing rooms with LGBTQ+ individuals without any issues.

The band also expressed dissatisfaction with not being given an equal opportunity to defend themselves. They said, “One man’s angle does not paint the whole story of the bigger picture. Regardless, we still wish everyone a successful #PrideMarch2023.”
